New ownCloud Sever is Live!

New Hardware, New ownCloud… who dis?!

Thank you all for your continued support and patronage here at Reed Tax & Accounting. Today, we are excited to discuss ownCloud X, an important update to our server.

Over the last three years, you have been using our old ownCloud server, which recently reached the end of its life cycle. It served us well, remaining stable and reliable until its final power down.

As we previously mentioned, all data from the old ownCloud server has been wiped, and we are now starting fresh. We have made a significant software update from the ownCloud 8 series to the new ownCloud X (10) series!

What Is ownCloud?

For those of you who are new to our service, let’s begin with an overview. ownCloud is a privacy-centric file hosting, sharing, and syncing cloud service that we adopted three years ago to comply with IRS regulations regarding data privacy. Similar to Dropbox, ownCloud allows you to store and access files in the cloud. However, the key difference is that we own (the own in ownCloud) the hardware, software, and security infrastructure, ensuring that no third parties can access or mine your data. We take your data privacy seriously, and only authorized personnel within the NikoVash Empire and Reed Tax & Accounting; specifically Patricia, Michelle, and the support staff, have access to it. We do not share or sell your data—it stays in-house, period!

The ownCloud version 10 (X) update was long overdue, and we spent a year preparing for it. We are now thrilled to introduce the new features and improvements it brings.

As a client of Reed Tax & Accounting, you receive your own personal ownCloud account free of charge as long as you remain a client (currently 5 GB, subject to change). You are free to use this account in any legal way you choose. Additionally, you now have server-side calendars that can be synced with your desktop or mobile devices.

Updates & Goals

For a comprehensive list of ownCloud changes, please refer here.

One of the significant changes is that we no longer generate the first-time password, a feature that we were never fond of. Our next major goal is to implement 2-Factor Authentication by 2020 to further enhance the security and privacy of your ownCloud accounts and ownCloud data.

We have also introduced the ability to emergency purge accounts. If you suspect that your data or account has been compromised, we can immediately terminate access. Once you provide new credentials and verify your identity, we will restore the account. However, please note that all data related to the compromised account will be permanently deleted. While we have not encountered any data breaches thus far, this feature provides everyone peace of mind.

Once again, we express our gratitude for your ongoing support, and we eagerly anticipate an amazing 2019 together!
